Dr. Edwin Moore

Who was Edwin Moore.

Dr. Edwin Moore was a research scientist at  Florida Universtity located on Experiment Station Road in Lake Alfred. He is credited with being the co-inventor of frozen orange juice concentrate. He received a patent for the invention in 1948.

Dr. Moore was a very quiet man and lived with his wife Eunice right here in Lake Alfred in a very unassuming house. Many people knew him and saw him walking around the city. Little did anyone know how much he was worth.

In his will he left $800,000 to the Friends of the Library with the stipulation that the money be used to build a library. He also left a significant amount to Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army and his church.  The Friends of the Library worked long and hard to make sure his wish was fulfilled.    In his honor and as he wished this is the new library named after him.

History of the Library

This is a brief history of how we got to this beautiful library today. This booklet was put together by Jane Brumbaugh and Margaret Wheaton. They spent hours gathering information and newspaper clippings to assemble the history from 1962 to 1973.  Check with the librarian for a copy of this booklet.
